The Southern Cross Ruby Academy Coaching Director is Ryan Roberts. Originally from Christchurch and playing Canterbury B in the NPC, Ryan moved to Australia in 2004. He quickly caught the eye of Representative sectors and played for Queensland Country in the Australia Shield in 2005. Overseas offers came in and Ryan took full advantage of the “rugby passport” and it was in Ireland that his coaching career started to take shape. Living and working as a rugby coach in Ireland is a well worn path for Australian and New Zealand coaches cutting their teeth and Ryan developed a reputation as a coach to watch. He lived up to that hype taking Navan to victory in the All Ireland Cup in 2009.

Australia lured him back to coach the Tuggeranong Vikings 1st Grade in 2014 where the Queensland Reds identified him as a coach of the future offering him a Development Officer role on the Gold Coast.

Ryan is currently coaching the Gold Coast Cyclones Under 19 team as well as the Alleygators 1st Grade team. Ryan is very well qualified from an accreditation view also being an ARU Level 2 Accredited Coach,  a Certificate 4 Personal Trainer, an HKC Kettle-bell Instructor and is also on the way to a Level 1 Zuu Training Instructor.

Ryan has the unique personality of being able to hold a group of 6 year olds and engage them with fun, then turn around and command respect from a squad of over sized 19 year olds. His knowledge of Rugby is only surpassed by approachable manner and genuine likeable nature.
