Welcome, to our very first Southern Cross Rugby Academy Blog post!!!
We feel this is the perfect chance to let all our supporters and participants know what the Southern Cross Rugby Academy are planning in the future for our Rugby development programs, where we are holding these training programs and providing all the information and anything else Rugby related that catches our eye.
We were excited to be present for the PBC Alleygators Junior Awards Presentation on Sunday 16th October. During the year we attend training’s and matches and observe players that come to our programs, and it’s also a great chance to see these young players improving on the field and enjoy their Rugby week to week during the season. We have three categories we provide awards to- U6-U9, U10-U13 and U14-U17 and each age group is marked on the merits of each player demonstrating the most improvement over the course of the year through skills, determination and commitment. This year the awards went to:
- U6-U9: Roary Robinson from the U9’s,
- U10-U13: Caiden Moana from the U11’s
- U14-U17: Tadhg Salmon from the U15’s.
Well done lads, we hope to help you develop both on and off the Rugby field, and we can’t wait to see your progress over the next few years.
During the Rugby season, we have been running free Rugby sessions for under 11’s Girls during home games for Alleygators Juniors. These sessions have focused on introducing the Girls to Rugby skills and progressing through to game play and basic components like the scrum and lineout. There was a steady group of Girls all getting stuck in and enjoying the drills and games at each session. We will be looking to continue next year, and keep an eye out for our Facebook page and or Instagram for more Girls Rugby updates.
We also look forward to another full off season planning and preparing for the 2019 Rugby season, guiding the future of Rugby and shaping them into highly skilled players as they progress through to Senior Rugby. It’s true that while the season ends very soon for all players, coaches, volunteers and supporters- RUGBY NEVER SLEEPS!!!!
Starting on the 22nd October and running through to Sunday 9th December sees the design and delivery of our 2nd edition off-season development program. This Rugby development program again features a 7wk training plan with main on-field focuses of- strength/conditioning, speed/agility, core skill development (catch/pass, tackle tech, ball carry/presentation, breakdown contest) while positional skills and attack vs defence drills and games will assist player development. Off field we again work with the players around goal setting, recovery techniques and basic nutrition guidelines and tracking. The program will also include a Girls Rugby focus with separate training sessions, designed to fast track all Girls Rugby ability and awareness. There will be a good break over Christmas and we will promote our 1st full 7wk pre-season player development program, again looking to improve on the hard work before Christmas and launch into the 2019 season ahead with new skill levels, strength and conditioning and a better awareness of how to prepare for training and games on weekends in season.
Our school engagement takes a big Rugby sevens focus in Term 3 and start of Term 4, as the QRU school sevens competitions get underway. We are providing high school coaching assistance with Elanora SHS, King’s Christian College and our Junior development with Primary school P.E. classes for Term 4 also is into planning stages.
Our aim through Term 4 is to deliver Primary school aged Rugby coaching sessions, based around the non-contact version of Rugby sevens and allow participants to learn the skills and game play required to eventually play inter school competitions in 2019 and beyond. We will retain the Rugby elements of set piece, and progressively teach the scrum, lineout and kick off and the contest for possession that is unique to Rugby Union. There has been great interest shown already and hopefully these sessions may introduce new players to Rugby Union for the 2019 season- no matter what school and club they play for.
We would also like to thank our sponsors ABC Brick sales, Tweed Coast Nissan and Commercial Project Services for their support of the Academy, and providing us the opportunity to promote Rugby Union every day.
Please follow us on the Facebook and Instagram social media, this is where we add in all our Rugby program information, action pics or videos of what we’re doing, and thanks for taking the time to read the Southern Cross Rugby Academy Blog- the first of many we hope!!!
